Chapter Twenty-One

Ghost

There are two rounds left.

I surveyed the winners from round two, working out where I'd find allies. Shortie and the two brothers had made it through.

Shortie had death in his eye and vengeance in his stance. Despite the green screen, the fucker had killed his opponent.

No support there.

The brothers stood together, talking quietly.

What's the bet they pair them off against one another?

I made my approach, ignoring the catcalls and abuse being hauled by the crowd as they sought refreshments and exchanged bets between the rounds.

"Yo," I called, approaching. "Good fights."

The brothers watched me, twin expressions of wariness on their faces.

"Thanks," one said, sizing me up. "Pity we're all about to kill each other."

A perfect opening.

"About that, what are you fighting for? Women or gold?"

The wary expressions turned guarded.

My gut said to wait them out but Ava's voice had become an annoying prompt in my head.

Give them a show of faith.

Fuck, I'm pussy whipped.

"I'm after two—friends of my woman." I nodded towards the cage. "She's in there right now, attempting to work out how to bust them free."

Both men stiffened.

"What the fuck?"

I leaned in. "Look, we all know what's about to go down. Even if you two make it through this match alive, one of you is gonna have to kill the other. It's too good a viewing for these sick fucks not to want it."

They both glanced over at the screen which had flicked to red.

"So, here's the deal. We need to delay this round, give my woman enough time to get all the women out. When it's clear, we end the fight and get out of here as fast as we fucking can—making as much of a distraction as possible to help them escape."

They looked sceptical.

"How the fuck as we supposed to do that?"

I jerked my head at Shortie who was sipping water near the exit.

"We kill him and pretend to kill one of you."

"And we just let you?" The talkative brother scoffed. "No thanks. Wasn't born yesterday."

I sucked in a breath. "Look, I'm only here for my woman. As soon as she gives the signal, I'm out. Don't care if you believe me or not. Just giving you the option." I looked between them. "I lost a brother back in the Before. I'm not above taking a life for the sake of my own, but this?" I pointed at the camera. "This is fucked. They're gonna pit you two against each other eventually. Taking the life of someone you love? That's the kind of shit that stains your soul."

The brothers watched me; their expressions closed.

"If you're with me then delay your fight—make it look good but draw it out. After I kill Shortie, watch for my signal. You'll know it when you see it."

I turned on my heel, giving them my back.

"You'll let us have our woman?"

Woman? Just the one?

I glanced back. "If she wants you, then yeah. If she doesn't, then I'm not forcing her."

They exchanged a look. "You'll take her somewhere safe?"

I nodded.

Though what is safety in the After?

"We'll watch for your signal.
